Well what a day! Rain the whole day through! Felt so sorry for all the members of the organising commitee for the Kirkheaton Big Picnic. Over a year and lots of hard work gone into the planning of the Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebration & Kirkheaton Scouts & Guides Gala here in Kirkheaton, Huddersfield. The rain kept quite a few stall holders and visitors away which was a shame.

That said, the people that did attend really enjoyed it despite the weather! There was a great sense of community spirt both from stall holders, the procession participants and the residents and visitors of Kirkheaton that turned out. All age groups where represented and all seemed to have fun! Sometimes a little bad weather can help bring a community together! It really was Yetton Together!

Organisation of the event seemed flawless despite the weather and most activities went ahead as planned. 

The Carnival Queen and attendants all looked stunning in their Diamond Jubilee Carnival Dresses and all smiled all the way around the procession despite the cold.

On arrival at the cricket ground the procession was greeted by the Mayor of Kirklees who went on to officially open the event. Many thanks to him for doing so.

From a photography point of view it was always going to be a challenge in the rain but i think on the whole i have managed to capture everything that went on and I feel that the community spirt really comes alive in my photographs. I am also still working on some video clips of the event which; along with the still photographs I hope to produce a multimedia DVD so there will be a long lasting record of the event for years to come.

I must give NIKON Cameras a quick complement for if it was not due to their attention to the waterproofing of their cameras we could well have no photographs of the event. My two camera bodies endured solid rain for eight hours and still carried on without a problem. If only the same could be said for my Metz flash that short circuited half way through the day due to water ingress, it could well still be an expensive day out for me.Gulp! I just hope that my markflynn photography stand located inside the cricket club (phew) generates enough new business to cover the cost.

My stand did attract lots of interest and looked rather well if i do say so myself! Must thank my partner Rachel & my mum & dad for manning the stand for me whilst i was out shooting the event. A splendid job!

Finally I hope the community of Kirkheaton will join me in a vote of thanks to the Big Picnic organising commitee who have worked so hard throughout the year and on the day making this event a success!
